US and allied bombers, fighter jets and robotic drones hit the ISIL group over a 24 hour period with four strikes south of the town, destroying an armored personnel carrier, three vehicles and an artillery piece, Central Command said in a statement on Wednesday.

Lebanon faces Isis and Nusra incursions – and an influx of refugees
The shooting went on for hours, heard even in the centre of ancient Baalbek as Hezbollah and the Jabhat al-Nusra/Isis insurgents from Syria fought it out on the ridgeline above the Roman city.
That is all the people of Baalbek could say on Monday after Hezbollah announced – after rather a long time – that the jihadis had been sent packing back up towards Syrian Qalamoun. But it was another shock to the body politic of Lebanon..........

US intensifies Afghan airstrikes as drawdown nears
As the United States and its allies began launching airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria in August, another — less public — air war was also heating up: in Afghanistan.

According to the latest Pentagon statistics, US combat aircraft dropped more bombs on Taliban and other militant targets in August than it had in any single month in two years — and nearly triple the monthly average since January.
Officials said they were still compiling the bombing statistics for September but the recent uptick in air attacks in Afghanistan comes as the United States is preparing to pull out about half of its 24,000 troops by the end of the year and curtail most combat operations.

The stepped-up campaign was viewed by some analysts as an effort to beat back recent Taliban gains ahead of the US drawdown. Others saw it as a preview of what might lie ahead as the Afghan government struggles to maintain its own security and needs sustained US help from the air.
The air power statistics, provided by the US Central Command in response to a Globe request, show 436 “weapon releases” in August, compared with the monthly average of about 150 for the previous seven months. That marks the most in a single month since August 2012, the figures show.......

US strike hits Iraqi residential building, 22 dead, 43 injured
The United States warplanes have killed at least 22 civilians and injured 43 others during an airstrike in Iraq, reports say.

According to reports, the attack occurred in the city of Hit, recently captured by the ISIL terrorists, in the Anbar province on Monday.
The planes erroneously targeted a building just 70 meters away from where the ISIL militants were holding a meeting.
There were five women and four children among the dead after the strike hit the apartment building where families lived.
Meanwhile, the number of civilian displacement is on the rise in the city due to “intensification of the bombing of airplanes” and mortar strikes, security sources in Anbar said.
ISIL militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer, after capturing large swaths of territory in neighboring Syria.........
